This edible flower was one of the first cultivated plants that showed me the wonders of growing. I brought home Johnny Jump-ups from nursery school and planted them at the base of our crab apple tree in our front yard. They grew, and spread, self-seeded and came back year after year. I still think back to that childhood memory each year when we plant cool tolerant violas in celebration of spring.
