Flax flowers form at the end of long, small-leaved protruding stems that jut upward slightly from fairly low-growing plants (12 to 18 inches). A mass of deep red blooms is stunning in borders or along walks. Easy to grow, it often re-seeds itself (but is never difficult to eliminate if desired). Like all flax, this plant belongs to the family of plants from which linen is made and nutritious flax seed is harvested.
